My Personal Story:

Sunshines, my mom was a single mom for most of my life. I rode alongside her on the way to college, so she could finish her bachelor’s degree. I watched her run a soapy mop over the entry way of our apartment, as she cleaned buildings on top of her full-time job to make ends meet. We never filled the car all the way up with gas. It was always, “Five dollars, please.” We bought one roll of toilet paper at a time, post-dated checks to wait for pay day and no trip to the grocery store ended without having to put some items back once the total was tallied. We certainly never went to a restaurant. The list goes on. And yet, I had nice haircuts and clothes and I am certain none of my friends knew I was poor or hard my mom struggled to ensure my brother and I never wanted for anything. I am pretty sure even I didn’t know how nearly impossible the situation was until I was an adult, a mom myself, looking back. My mom told me that once the Salvation Army brought us Thanksgiving. I never knew. She always made me feel loved and like I could do anything. I believed it and still do because of her.

One thing I knew for certain was that my mom never did anything for herself. She never went out to dinner with friends or bought herself nice things and she definitely never want on a vacation. My mom is still my hero. She bravely escaped domestic violence with two young kids on her own, eventually going on to get earn master’s degree and becoming a professor and an art therapist. If you know her, then you know she makes everyone feel like the most important person in the room. To this day she tells me I am amazing nearly every time we talk. She was and still is shining the light on everyone else.

During these hard years, we had an amazing circle of women, my mom’s friends, who treated us like family. They gave us a car, invited us to events, took me back to school shopping, babysat us in the mornings before school... They were lifelines and Godsends. My hope is that every single mom has a tribe and a community like Mary and Pam were to us. I am giving this trip to a single mom to give back in a small way- the way I was given so much.

My mom’s friend Mary at our apartment pool. Disregard what I said about my good haircuts lol. In all seriousness though, Mary and her family were an integral part of childhood that I am eternally grateful for.

Coffee with my mom-the Best mom, Nana, friend and human.
